Glossary List
To break into the fire service, you need to speak the language before you even pull on your first pair of boots. This glossary is your roadmap to the essential Fire and EMS terminology used on the streets and in the firehouse, giving you the "jobtown" knowledge you need to walk onto the floor with confidence
Operational Terms

Chief's Buggy | The vehicle used by the Fire Chief. | South/Midwest | Often called "The Car" or "C-1" in the Northeast. |
Drafting | Sucking water from a static source (lake/pond). | Rural/National | Essential for areas without hydrants. |
Engine | Apparatus with a pump, tank, and hose. | Universal | Never call an Engine a "Truck" in a firehouse. |
Exposure | Building/area at risk of catching fire. | National | "Protect the Bravo exposure!" |

Flashover | Simultaneous ignition of everything in a room. | National | |

High Rise | Building fought from the inside. | Urban/National | Usually buildings over 75 feet tall. |
Hydrant | Formal term for a water supply source. | Universal | The term used in all SOPs and manuals. |
Hydraulic Tools | "Jaws of Life" for car rescue. | National | Includes spreaders, cutters, and rams. |
IDLH | Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health. | National | Technical safety term for toxic environments. |
Irons | Halligan and Flat-head Axe paired. | Universal | |
Knockdown | When the main body of fire is extinguished. | Universal | Fire is not "out," just under control. |
LDH | Large Diameter Hose (4" or 5"). | National | Used for high-volume water supply lines. |

Sector | A geographic area of an incident (ICS). | National | E.g., "The Ventilation Sector." |
Size-Up | Initial assessment by the first officer. | Universal | Sets the strategy for the entire response. |
Standpipe | Internal water pipes for hoses in buildings. | National | Hook hoses to these in high-rise stairwells. |
The Plug | Slang for a fire hydrant. | Universal | Derived from old wooden water "plugs." |
Truck | Apparatus with a large aerial ladder. | Universal | Specifically refers to the aerial device. |
Turnouts | Protective coat and pants (PPE). | West/South | West Coast version of "Bunker Gear." |
Ventilation | Removing heat and smoke from a building. | Universal | Often involves cutting a hole in the roof. |
